Machiya Sideboard continues Liam's exploration of the Japanese aesthetics of ‘Ma’, focusing on negative space and the intervals formed by wooden lattices as found in traditional Kyoto townhouse architecture known as Machiya.
The phenomenon of void created by repeating lines, gave way to a mode of thought and questioning; What happens when you fill this negative space and what would best fill it?
Machiya Sideboard is a functional, aesthetic and emotional answer to this question. As the doors open, the negative space is filled, the grain in the wood aligns and one complete panel is formed. This moment of alignment creates a level of consciousness of space.
